If you look up as you walk through the square in front of the Duomo of Messina as the clock strikes the hour, you'll notice a flash of gold. Statues of two women ring the bell in the center of the Duomo arch, a daily ritual that is a shadow of their original heroic deed. The two women were standing guard outside their village when it was attacked and ran to sound the alarm, urging people to fight back.
